Family travel often involves compromise. Parents sacrifice relaxation for entertainment, children tolerate sightseeing for ice cream, and often, everyone collapses with sheer exhaustion sometime soon after the sun goes down. Royal Madikwe Safari Lodge somehow manages to remove that compromise, creating a safari experience that feels genuinely enjoyable for everyone. Discover why this destination quicklyy became one of our favourite family holiday spots, and why our daughter has been begging to go back ever since.
Our home in the bush: The Royal Villa
For families, the Royal Villa is the sort of accommodation that makes you want to move in permanently. A double story space with two full bedrooms with massive en-suite bathrooms, a large outdoor viewing deck with private pool, and an upstairs lounge, the villa offered plenty of room. The pool quickly became a favourite space for our five-year-old between game drives, while we were free to relax on the loungers looking over the waterhole with a bottle from our own private cellar while our toddler had a nap. And while the villa felt undeniably exclusive, it never felt precious. We weren’t constantly worried about sticky fingers or muddy shoes, which is exactly what you want when travelling with young children. In fact, there was even a box of toys in the lounge for our use.
The staff who make the magic happen
Luxury lodges often talk about service. Royal Madikwe delivers it in a way that feels natural and genuinely warm. Every member of staff we encountered was friendly, welcoming and wonderfully accommodating. Nothing ever seemed too much trouble, whether it was adjusting mealtimes to accommodate for our little ones, or simply stopping for a chat. One of our standout family members was the dedicated childminder. Rather than simply supervising children, she actively engaged them in activities designed to connect them with the bush. Our five-year-old spent time bug collecting, painting rocks and exploring around camp, returning each time with a new treasure and a story to tell. While she had her own safari adventure we enjoyed a rare luxury for parents of young children: uninterrupted conversation and rest. And when we left our daughter begged for “her new friend” to come with us.
A private vehicle changes everything
One of the greatest luxuries at Royal Madikwe is having your own private safari vehicle and guide. When travelling with young children, flexibility is everything, especially on safari. Need to head back early for a nap? No problem. Want to spend an extra twenty minutes watching elephant calves splash in a waterhole? Easy. Need an emergency snack stop because someone suddenly announces they’re starving? Also possible. Rather than trying to fit into a group schedule, a private safari revolves around your family. Our guide quickly understood what interested both us as adults and our children, tailoring each drive accordingly.
An array of wildlife
Madikwe is renowned for its wildlife, and it certainly delivered. One of the highlights was seeing African wild dogs, among the continent’s most endangered predators and often one of the most difficult safari sightings to achieve. We also encountered lions on multiple occasions, while zebra, elephant and rhino sightings were abundant. And while some people may think safaris aren’t for babies, our one-year-old was enthralled, bouncing along pointing excitedly at anything with four legs. The beauty of Madikwe is not only the quality of sightings but the variety and the quantity. Every drive felt different, and there was always the possibility that the next bend in the road would reveal something extraordinary.
The waterhole that never stops giving
While the game drives were spectacular at Royal Madikwe you don’t actually need to leave your villa to see wildlife, because it comes to you. The waterhole directly in front of camp provided constant entertainment throughout our stay. It became the backdrop to breakfasts, afternoon drinks and quiet moments between activities. Elephants were frequent visitors, often arriving in family groups and lingering for long periods. Zebra appeared regularly, while kudu drifted in and out with characteristic elegance.
Dining tailored to you
If there’s one thing Royal Madikwe understands, it’s that families don’t always operate according to a fixed timetable. The dining experience is wonderfully flexible, with the chef readily available to tailor menus to individual preferences. Whether accommodating younger diners, specific tastes or dietary requirements, every meal was personalised. Some meals were enjoyed in the main lodge, while others were enjoyed on the privacy of our villa deck and we even enjoyed a special evening of drumming and dinner around the fire. We also enjoyed the option of dining out in the reserve itself, enjoying our salmon breakfast bagels while a long-legged giraffe looked on. The food itself was consistently excellent, balancing creativity with comfort and ensuring both adults and children were well catered for.
The luxury of having the place to ourselves
One of the most remarkable aspects of our stay was the exclusivity. The amazing private villas provide an experience that ensures a personal safari but during our visit, we were privileged enough to actually have the entire lodge to ourselves. There was no need to reign in the children, no need to keep voices down around others and no need to share facilities. Every experience was ours, and ours alone to enjoy however we wished.
Little touches for the tiniest travellers
Rather than simply providing a few children’s amenities, the lodge had new surprises for us every day. Our five-year-old was delighted to receive a bug collecting kit and spent much of her stay investigating every interesting insect she could find. There were creative activities too, from painting wildlife scenes on canvas to decorating wooden lizards, all of which we were gifted to take home. One particularly memorable experience was making a footprint cast out in the bush, transforming an animal track into a treasured keepsake. We were gifted toys, thoughtful gifts and even clothing and the fully stocked minibar meant juices and refreshments were always on hand, allowing us to grab drinks whenever the children needed them without having to think twice. It was these small but carefully considered touches that made the entire stay feel effortless and showed just how well the lodge understands family travel.
Why Royal Madikwe works so well for families
A safari holiday with young children can seem particularly challenging, with long drives, early mornings and unpredictable wildlife. Royal Madikwe turns that assumption on its head. The combination of family-friendly accommodation, dedicated childcare, private game drives, flexible dining and exceptional wildlife viewing creates an experience that both parents and children can genuinely enjoy. Rather than simply tolerating young guests, Royal Madikwe actively embraces families and adapts around their needs. The result is a safari where children can develop a love of nature, parents can actually relax, and everyone returns home with stories they’ll be telling for years.
