We stumbled upon Montagu Country Hotel while chasing a last-minute weekend escape in an April filled with multiple school and public holidays. We were all desperately in need of a break that would keep everyone happy, from the baby who still naps regularly to our ever-curious four-year-old princess. What we found was more than a place to sleep. It was a bit of time travel, a lot of comfort, and a getaway we could all enjoy.
Here are 9 reasons we fell head over heels for Montagu Country Hotel:
1. A hotel with heart and history
There’s something incredibly special about staying somewhere that’s not just managed but truly loved. Montagu Country Hotel is owner-run by PJ and Colene Basson, who went from hotel manager to owner after many years of service at the property. You can feel their care in every detail, from the perfectly manicured gardens to the personal greetings and thoughtful touches throughout your stay. As part of the Cape Country Routes‘ collection of small authentic properties in the South African countryside, the hotel maintains a high standard while keeping its unique charm and deeply local soul. It’s not just a place to stay, it’s a place that’s been nurtured into something extraordinary.
2. Stepping into another era (and loving every minute)
There’s something magical about pulling into a hotel where time seems to have politely paused, with a grand old staircase, plush chairs, and piano in the lounge. The art deco details had us grown-ups swooning too – every lampshade, mirror and polished floorboard telling stories from a bygone age. It felt like we were all in a storybook. We were also welcomed with big smiles and a genuine interest from every staff member, from the owner right down to the waiter. It sounds simple, but it made us feel like part of the family, not just room numbers.
3. Generous rooms that provide a home away from home
If you’ve ever tried to squeeze a travel cot and two suitcases into a so-called family suite, you’ll know that a generously sized room is often rare to find. Here, we had enough room to unpack, spread out and breathe. A proper bath for the girls’ bubbles, a shower that was big enough to swing a cat, a king bed plus twin beds that weren’t wedged against the wall, and even a little sitting area and a balcony for us to enjoy a quiet glass of wine after bedtime. Bliss.
4. Garden space with pools that felt like an oasis
The gardens here are stunning, with blooming rose bushes and towering palm trees. There’s space to sit under the trees with coffee and watch the kids play, but it’s enclosed and small enough to feel safe with little ones. There are also two pools for lazy afternoons in the sun where you can alternate between swimming and lounging.
5. A stunning start to the day with a complimentary breakfast
Mornings started slowly, with made-to-order eggs, bacon, sausages and all the trimmings. The girls also loved choosing their own juice, pastries, cheese, and fruit from the cold continental buffet while we appreciated not having to rush. It was breakfast as it should be on holiday – an event and an exciting part of the day, not just a forced necessity.
6. Exploring and mountain views right from the door
One morning, we ventured out for a walk around town. The flat, quiet roads made for easy paths even for little legs, with views that made us stop every few minutes for photos. There were plenty of antique shops, art stores, and even a church with a local craft market to pop in to along the way. Back at the hotel, we rewarded ourselves with delicious milkshakes on the roadside patio.
7. Cruising in an American Dream
One of the highlights of our stay, and something we’re still talking about, was the vintage car experience offered by the hotel’s very own American Dream Cars. The owner runs vineyard tours in his lovingly restored 1956 Cadillac Sedan De Ville or 1964 Cadillac Sedan de Ville. It’s all about more of that nostalgia, taking a moment out of time, and seeing the town in style.
8. Soaking, snacking, and exploring
Montagu is famous for its natural hot springs, and we couldn’t resist spending a few hours soaking in the warm, mineral-rich water just a short drive from the hotel. The girls loved splashing in the shallow pools, while we melted into the steam and admired the mountains. Afterwards, we stopped to stock up on Montagu’s legendary dried fruit, our favourite was the chewy mango. If you’re feeling more adventurous, there are several hiking trails for all levels just outside town and interesting activities like tractor rides, with views that reward even little legs with big scenery.
9. An Evening at Charlestons
Back at the hotel, dinner at Charlestons Restaurant was a treat for everyone. The multi-course dinners provide tasty options including slow-cooked lamb, silky soups, and rich desserts. And the best part? After this hearty, elegant meal we could roll to our room afterwards with deliciously full tummies.
All in all, Montagu Country Hotel gave us a weekend that felt like a deep breath. It managed to tick all the boxes for a family trip – one we’ll be repeating soon.
