With its delightful runner ducks, luxurious spa, exquisite wines, engaging kiddies play area, and stunning cottages with their own private pool, Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate beckoned to us with a promise of unforgettable experiences for all ages. And it didn’t disappoint, promising to be the ideal setting for a memorable weekend getaway recently.
Here are just a few of the reasons why I recommend a family getaway at Vergenoegd Löw:
The enchanting runner ducks
One of the most enchanting and unique features of Vergenoegd Löw, and definitely one of the things that made us want to visit the farm, is their utterly adorable Indian Runner ducks. Each morning, these charming ducks march across the estate in a whimsical procession that captivates both children and adults alike. But their wonderful waddle is not only a delightful spectacle to watch, but it also serves a practical purpose: the ducks help with pest control in the vineyards, maintaining the estate’s eco-friendly practices. Essentially, you’re watching them on the way to work! This heartwarming experience really helped to add a touch of magic to your stay, with the ducks heading off to work daily at 9am before returning for a quick siesta on the lawn at 12 before heading back to their homes.
Elegant cottages with a private pool
The accommodation at Vergenoegd Löw was nothing short of spectacular. The estate’s newly opened luxury cottages offered a perfect blend of modern elegance and rustic charm. Each cottage is thoughtfully designed with spacious living areas, two comfortable en-suite bedrooms, and contemporary amenities to ensure a luxurious stay. There’s also a complimentary mini bar, stocked to the brim with cool drinks, beers, wine and mixers which is great when travelling with kids who are always looking for a juice or some water. The highlight, however, was the private pool. It was heated so even on the brink of winter we could still enjoy a quality time with a dip as a family.
Luxurious spa experiences
In need of a bit of relaxation and rejuvenation, the estate’s luxurious spa promised a range of treatments designed to pamper and revitalise. I decided to treat myself and my daughter to a mini mani/pedi – adding a touch of fun and elegance to the stay. The serene spa environment, coupled with friendly therapists, ensured a blissful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and my daughter absolutely adored her very first spa experience.
Exquisite wine tastings and something fun for little ones
No visit to Vergenoegd Löw would be complete without experiencing the estate’s renowned wines. The estate’s rich winemaking heritage is evident in every glass and the expert sommeliers guide you through the various blends. There’s even the opportunity to try some German wines with varietal names I had never seen before and won’t even attempt to repeat. And to ensure we could indulge in a glass of wine in peace, a nearby kiddies play area beckons young explorers. From climbing structures to swings and slides, the play area provided endless entertainment and a secure and safe place for our little one to while away the time.
A range of culinary delights
There are a range of dining options to enjoy on site at Vergenoegd Löw, all the brain-child of renowned local chef Betrus Basson. The estate’s on-site restaurant, Geuwels, was a fabulous place to enjoy or morning breakfast while Clara’s Barn provided a fine-dining multi-course degustation on our first night. Both restaurants heavily feature locally sourced ingredients which celebrating the rich flavors of the region and provide healthy but delicious options for children. No one went hungry on this trip!
Proximity to Somerset West and Cape Town
One of the many advantages of staying at Vergenoegd Löw is its convenient proximity to Somerset West, Stellenbosch and Cape Town. Located just a short drive away, you can easily getaway for the weekend without forcing the children into a long journey.
So, what are you waiting for? Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or quality family time, Vergenoegd Löw promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Stellenbosch’s wine country.
