An inner city escape with Hippo Boutique Hotel

In the heart of the bustling inner city of Cape Town lies a hidden gem that promises a retreat from the ordinary – Hippo Boutique Hotel. A recent family staycation at this charming hotel left us feeling rejuvenated and inspired.

Our oasis in the heart of the city

apartment-accommodation-cape-townUpon arrival at this property, which is nestled just off bustling Kloof Street, we were welcomed into a spacious apartment-style suite that immediately felt like a home away from home. The thoughtful design and attention to detail were evident, with every corner exuding warmth and comfort. The apartment boasted convenient convertible furniture, ensuring that an ottoman in the lounge could be changed each evening into a comfortable bed for our child, while wardrobe doors rolled away to reveal a little kitchenette with cutlery, crockery and a microwave – perfect for travelling with an ever-hungry and demanding toddler!

Owner-run charm

The friendly hosts not only welcomed us warmly but also went out of their way to ensure that every aspect of our stay was perfect. Their genuine hospitality created a relaxed atmosphere that made us feel like valued guests rather than just another visitor passing through. In the lobby, were you’ll also find a constant supply of tea and coffee and there is a board for finding out more about the other owner-run properties that are members of the Cape Country Routes collection of hotels and guesthouses. Far removed from the big conglomerates, each of these hotels offers a unique and authentic experience in various charming locations around South Africa’s Western and Eastern Cape.

Family-friendly touches

A hand-written welcome note and a bottle of wine were also nice touches that one wouldn’t find in a more corporate establishment.

Proximity to the sights of Cape Town

Whether strolling over to the Company Gardens and the iZiko South African Museum, or simply exploring local shops, everything was just a stone’s throw away. This blend of tranquility and accessibility made it easy to immerse ourselves in the vibrant energy of the city for the weekend while knowing that a peaceful retreat still awaited at the end of each day. The hotel even has its own little pool tucked away in the parking lot if you need some extra respite.cape-town-pool

Gourmet breakfast delights

Each morning began with a delightful dilemma – choosing from the hotel’s varied breakfast options. The hotel’s unique “Rise and Dine” breakfast concept allows you to head off each morning with a voucher in hand to one of four local eateries of your choice, each offering a distinct and delicious breakfast experience. You can start your day at Therapy with a diverse menu that caters to all tastes, at the Egghead Diner which offers a quirky ambiance with retro design elements that complement its famous Egghead Roll, a quick breakfast on the go, a giant muffin or slice of cake at Mugg & Bean, or community favourite Molten Toffee. It’s a great way to explore the area from the very first moments of your day.
