In the heart of the Cape Winelands, Val du Charron Wine Estate offers an experience that blends luxury, comfort, and rustic charm. We recently had the pleasure of staying at this magnificent estate for an unforgettable weekend. From dining at The Grillroom to indulging in a pizza lunch at Pizza Vista and staying overnight in a luxury suite in the Coach House, Val du Charron exceeded all our expectations.
A proud member of Cape Country Routes
Driving up to Val du Charron, we were immediately captivated by the breathtaking scenery. Some friendly cows greeted us with the surrounding rolling vineyards and the majestic mountains providing the perfect backdrop. We’d chosen Val du Charron due to its membership with Cape Country Routes, a collection of handpicked, independently owned properties that represent the best of South African hospitality. These properties offer personalised services and unique local experiences that set them apart from other chain hotels or foreign-run Winelands estates.
Accommodation in the Coach House
For our short weekend stay we’d chosen luxurious accommodation in the Coach House. The suite was nothing short of spectacular. Spacious and elegantly decorated, it combined modern amenities with classic charm. The suite featured a private terrace with sweeping views of the vineyards – waking up to that view was a highlight of our stay, while the bathroom was equally luxurious, with a freestanding tub and a rain shower that provided the perfect relaxation after a day of exploring the estate. While we were there in winter and thus didn’t use it, there was also a private plunge pool. Little touches like a complimentary mini bar, and plush bathrobes made the experience feel even more indulgent.
Dining at The Grillroom
After settling in, we were eagerly anticipating dinner at The Grillroom, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance of the restaurant is cosy yet sophisticated, with a few fireplaces adding to the intimate atmosphere. The menu is a meat lover’s paradise, offering a range of perfectly aged steaks, lamb, and game. We opted for a fillet steak and a lamb shank, both of which were cooked to perfection – tender, juicy, and bursting with flavour. Paired with their estate’s own wine, the meals were a celebration of the rich, robust flavours.
The service was impeccable, with the staff attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and wine pairings. The highlight of the evening was the dessert – a decadent chocolate brownie that was pure indulgence and a typically South African malva pudding.
Lunch at Pizza Vista
The next day, after spending the morning exploring the farm, discovering the modern cellars, seeing some of the interesting art dotted around the estate, and letting our little one play on the jungle gym, we headed to Pizza Vista for lunch, eager to try their wood-fired pizzas. The restaurant offers a more laid-back vibe than The Grillhouse, with a vibrant atmosphere and stunning views of the vineyards and mountains. The open-air terrace is the perfect spot to soak up the sun while enjoying a delicious meal.
The freshly-made pizzas were thin and crispy, with just the right amount of chew, and the toppings fresh and flavorful. The pastas were equally delicious and the decadent milkshakes the perfect pairing for all ages. Our daughter was even provided with her own ball of dough to roll and add toppings to, before being invited into the kitchen to cook her very own pizza. The service here was equally warm and friendly, making the whole experience even more enjoyable.
Final thoughts
Overall, our weekend at Val du Charron Wine Estate was one that went beyond just world-class accommodation and stunning natural beauty, with the various dining options really standing out as a highlight of our stay. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a foodie, or simply looking for a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Val du Charron has something to offer. As a proud member of Cape Country Routes, the estate ensures a high standard of service and authenticity, making it a standout choice in the Cape Winelands. My visit was nothing short of perfect, and we left with a heart full of memories and a promise to return as soon as we can.
