Review: GOLD Restaurant’s Spice Experience

Chili, ginger, turmeric, paprika, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, cardamom… what do these all have in common? They’re all on the menu at GOLD’s new Spice Experience

GOLD Restaurant, unassuming from the outside, located down one of Green Point’s side streets, holds within a world of wonder, laughter and entertainment. Since I first discovered this Cape Town gem a few year’s ago it has been one of my favourite restaurants in the city. Their typical menu is an explosion of flavours from all over Africa, served sharing-style in a number of rounds consisting of 14 dishes altogether. However, its the entertainment that really has been the highlight of every visit of mine to GOLD. The evening gets going with a fun interactive drumming experience and throughout the night you can look forward to a parade of performers past your table from face painters to larger than life puppets, amazing singers and warrior-like dancers.

So, imagine my delight when I discovered that GOLD was introducing a completely new experience at this much-loved dining venue. I simply had to give it a try!

Led by the Burundi-born Nouvelle, the experience takes the fun parts of history and cooking lessons and combines them into one entertaining evening where all you have to do is eat, listen, eat, smell, taste, eat some more, and even dance and sing along if you like. Nouvelle will regale you with tales of the various African spices as she explains a bit about each one and how they contribute to the delightful morsels on your plate. Each bite is a journey as you discover the spices of Africa.

I really enjoyed learning about the different spices, where they came from, how to cook and prepare them and seeing and tasting them in all their various forms. I came away from the evening will a whole new outlook on my country, my continent and the variety of African cuisines! What a way to spice up the experience at GOLD!
